Fashion’s biggest charity event: Met Gala
May 1, 2023, the annual fundraising Met Gala, dubbed the fashion’s biggest night, was held in Manhattan, New York, and received global attention. This year’s dress code was “in honor of Karl” in line with the museum’s exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. American celebrities and global stars including Song Hye Kyo and Jennie of Black Pink showed up for the event.
The event’s highlight was the remake of Lagerfeld’s creations many years during his legacy in Chloe, Fendi, Chanel, and so on. Janelle Monae spoke strongly of her opinion as a Black woman and a sexual minority on her red-carpet interview, and Halle Bailey, the new Little Mermaid, came to the spotlights with an all-white dress with a short haircut. Singer Doja Cat wore makeup and a dress inspired by the cat Karl Lagerfeld raised in his time.

1. Quinta Brunson
Actress Quinta Brunson made her Met Gala debut this year. With Chanel’s signature camellia flower decoration, the see-through dress was matched with a colorful dress. Wearing the creation of Prabal Gurung, her natural hair made an elegant up-do hairstyle matching the dress. Perfectly finished edge and the leaf-shaped accessories sneaking outof the textured hair made an impressive look.
2. Halle Bailey
She is the star of the new live-action remake of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”. Gucci secured the hottest actress in Hollywood at the time, and the short hair, very different from her appearance in The Little Mermaid, highlighted her adorable look with the little remnant from the movie, the locs at the top.
3. Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae wore a dress with contrasting inside and out looks. The contrast was between a black and white jacket and a black bikini by Thom Browne. Janelle’s hairstylist Nikki Nelms explained that her up-do hair gives way for the white tweed tuxedo to shine but at the same time makes its own appeal.
4. Rihanna and ASAP Rocky
Rihanna and ASAP Rocky made seldom appearances in public since her childbirth, so the couple’s Met Gala appearance gathered a lot of spotlights. Although they were the latest to show up, Rihanna’s dress wowed many people. The all-white dress and a jacket decorated with Chanel’s signature Camellia flower were of Valentino.
5. Michaela Coel
The British actress Michaela was one of the co-hosts of this year’s Met Gala. Michaela’s lace dress was decorated with 130,000 crystals, totaling 3,800 hours in making. Her neat cornrow hair completed the look.
6. Viola Davis
Actress Viola Davis wore a vibrant dress by Valentino with feathers on the red carpet. Her signature afro hair got many people’s attention, and it was styled with her own hair.
7. Cardi B
The notorious female rapper Cardi B showed off her perfectly maintained postpartum body shape. Setting apart from other celebs, she appeared in three different looks, which channeled the career peak of Karl Lagerfeld. The most attention-getting look was a dress that reinterpreted Chanel’s quilt bag completed with a big camellia flower, long opera gloves, and silver hair.
The most noticeable feature of the 2023 Met Gala was the number of Black celeb guests. It indirectly showed the status of Black celebrities in the American fashion and entertainment industry. It was spoken behind the curtain that a lot of Black guests collaborated with Black designers to bring more opportunities to the Black community. A lot of Black celebs spoke strongly of the current issues regarding Black history and culture, and they made it public to spread the positive influence in society.
